CCREAD BUEA CAMEROON PROJECT

In the middle of the slums of Buea, Cameroon, a new vocational training facility is set up by a group of committed citizens. Gered Gereedschap has been asked to equip the class rooms with tools. The students will now not only receive lessons but also hands-on practical training.

Buea is a city in northwestern Cameroon. The city has extensive slums where large groups of marginalised women and children live. A group of citizens from Buea decided this had to be put to an end. They approached foreign partners. This led to the creation of CCRED, Centre for Community Regeneration -and Development in 2006. The aim of CCREAD is to help the vulnerable people of Buea to get access to a decent life by providing vocational education and sustainable agricultural projects. Furthermore, they promote the value of human rights and campaign against domestic violence. Meanwhile the organisation has been given a special consultative status by the United Nations.

Future as a craftsman after vocational training

Buea has about 100,000 inhabitants of whom more than 61% is younger than 24 years. It is imperative for these young people to get access to quality education to avoid large groups to end up in poverty. This is why CCREAD has started setting up a vocational training facility in the slums of Buea. Intended for young people between 14 and 30 years. Young people are able to receive vocational training in tailoring, woodworking, plumbing, metalworking and electrical engineering. The training facility will offer an opportunity to receive a 2-year vocational training for 100 students. CCREAD guides the students after graduating towards employment or in setting up their own business.

CCREAD requires assistance of Gered Gereedschap to support the training facility with tools to equip the class rooms. Currently there is nothing. If Gered Gereedschap does not provide support, the vocational training comprises mainly theoretical training. This is not enough to become a skilled craftsman. For that, it is definitely necessary to receive a lot of practical training. Therefore, Gered Gereedschap wants to provide the vocational training facility with classroom toolsets for woodworking, plumbing, metalworking, electrician and sewing machines.
