‘WE ARE ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION, INCREASING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS’

Near the source of the Nile River, in Njeru, near Jinja, Uganda, Gered Gereedschap is working together with the Nile Vocational Institute (NVI) to improve and professionalize vocational education. This partnership has already made significant progress in training young people who would otherwise have no chance of receiving a proper vocational education. We spoke with Edison Ongerep, the director of the school.

‘The collaboration with Gered Gereedschap has had an impact on two important areas within our institute: improving the quality of education and training, and facilitating access to the labor market for students who graduate. Classrooms and workshops are now equipped with modern tools and machines, which enhances the practical training of students. Before the intervention of Gered Gereedschap, outdated and insufficient equipment caused delays and inefficiencies in the training programs.

Thanks to the support from Gered Gereedschap, training assignments that previously took weeks due to a shortage of equipment can now be completed much faster. The availability of modern tools has not only streamlined the training process but also reduced the physical strain on students. This has led to a more efficient and less exhausting learning experience, allowing students to focus on improving their skills.’

A Bright Future for Disadvantaged Students

‘The impact of Gered Gereedschap’s program goes beyond just improved training facilities. For many students, it has opened new doors, especially for those who could attend school with a scholarship. Thanks to Gered Gereedschap’s program, he now has hope to start his own workshop, change his life, and secure a better future.’

Challenging Both Students and Teachers

‘The training of teachers, both in terms of subject knowledge and didactic skills, is another important part of the Gered Gereedschap program. As a result, teachers can effectively convey both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Furthermore, Gered Gereedschap supports access to the labor market through apprenticeship programs, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and expand their practical knowledge.’

Aligning the Curriculum to Market Needs

‘Gered Gereedschap has also played a crucial role in adapting the curriculum to market demand. By integrating various skills such as woodworking and metalworking, the program ensures that students receive comprehensive training that prepares them for real-world challenges. The improved collaboration with local businesses helps bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring that students possess the skills needed in today’s job market. This increases their chances of employment, and with that, a life free from poverty. And that is what we are all working for!’

WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED?

At Nile Vocational Institute, we have professionalized the fields of Woodworking and Metalworking, set up workshops with tools and machines, trained teachers, provided scholarships to disadvantaged youth, and offered a starter set of tools or sewing machines for graduating students.
